AS9100™D “Quality Management Systems – Requirements for Aviation, Space, and Defence Organisations” defines a Special Process as those processes where the resulting output cannot be verified by subsequent monitoring or measurement. We therefore have to rely on the control of the process during application as our primary quality control method.

Invariably the coating to be applied will come with a starting set of parameters for all of the variables i.e. gun hardware, gas flows, spray distances (stand-off), powder/wire feed rate, current, voltage etc. etc. These parameters, which are usually supplied by an OEM, the material manufacturer or the equipment manufacturer, often need fine tuning to achieve the exact coating acceptance criteria.
